In Their Own Words

My daughter joined the Young Savers Programme in April and I've noticed a genuine shift — she started asking about our family's monthly expenses, which had never happened before. The saver's journal came home each week and sparked some good conversations. The sessions felt structured but not overwhelming for a 15-year-old.

I was a bit sceptical at first — my son is 13 and money topics felt a bit advanced. But the workshop format worked well for him. He came back energised about the group challenge part. I'd say it's more about awareness than deep knowledge at the Workshop level, which is fair for a two-session intro. We're considering the five-week programme next.

We enrolled my two teenagers — one in the Workshop, one in the Foundations Course. The Mid Valley location was very convenient for us in PJ. The facilitator was approachable and kept the sessions moving at a good pace. The Foundations Course gave my older daughter a solid base — she now tracks her own spending in a small notebook she keeps herself.

The consent and communication process was reassuring. Before my son joined, I spoke with the team about what would be covered and what wouldn't — they were clear that it's education, not financial advice. He came home after each Young Savers session with a worksheet that we'd look at together. Good experience overall.

My daughter is 14 and had no interest in money topics at all. The Workshop was suggested as a low-commitment starting point and that worked — she went along, didn't feel pressured, and actually asked about the five-week programme on the way home. The group format helped a lot; it felt less like a class and more like a game.

We did the Foundations Course with my 16-year-old who will be entering university in two years. Ten weeks felt like the right depth — each session built logically on the last. The reference pack they gave out at the end is something we've actually referred back to a few times. The team was thoughtful, patient, and realistic about what the course can and can't do.

Three Families, Three Starting Points
Each family came to Bayu from a different place — here's how their teens' experiences unfolded.
Case Study 01
The teen who spent every ringgit by Wednesday
Challenge
A 15-year-old in Kuala Lumpur was going through her weekly allowance within two or three days, with no clear sense of where it went. Her parent wanted her to understand spending patterns before the habit became more entrenched.
Programme
She joined the Young Savers Programme. Week 1 introduced spending tracking using a simple journal format. By Week 2 she had mapped her weekly outgoings and identified two spending patterns she hadn't noticed before.
After the Programme
Her parent reported that she was making it to the end of the week with something left over — not every week, but most. More importantly she was able to explain the choices she'd made, which hadn't happened before. Duration: 5 weeks.
"She surprised me when she said 'I know what I'm spending on now.' That was the whole point."
— Parent, Bangsar
Case Study 02
The reluctant teen who became the group's most active participant
Challenge
A 13-year-old in Kepong had no interest in money topics and would disengage from any conversation about budgeting or saving. His parent wanted to find a way in that didn't feel like a lecture or a lesson.
Programme
He attended the Teen Money Quest Workshop — chosen for its short two-session format and game-based structure. The group challenge in Session 2 was where he engaged: he led his team through the spending scenario and worked out the most options.
After the Programme
He asked to join the Young Savers Programme the following month. The peer element was clearly the entry point for him. His engagement grew across the five weeks and he completed the reward chart. Duration: 2 sessions, then 5 weeks.
"He asked to go back. I didn't need to persuade him. That was enough for me."
— Parent, Kepong
Case Study 03
The 16-year-old preparing for university life
Challenge
With university two years away, a 16-year-old and her parent wanted a structured way to build money understanding before she would be managing her own living expenses. They wanted something age-appropriate and clear about what it was — not financial advice.
Programme
She enrolled in the Teen Finance Foundations Course — ten weeks covering budgeting, saving, smart spending, and everyday money tools. The clinics in weeks 5 and 10 gave her space to ask about things she wasn't sure of without pressure.
After the Programme
She left with the youth finance reference pack and a working understanding of how to set a monthly budget. Her parent noted she now separates her allowance into three purposes each week — something she developed herself from the session content. Duration: 10 weeks.
"The course was honest about being educational content, not financial advice. That made it easier to trust."
— Parent, Subang Jaya
